Taiwanese Gov't to Subsidize Green Technology
July 22, 2005
In response to the rising consciousness for environmental protection, the Taiwanese Ministry of Economic Affairs has plans to launch Program G, a plan formulated to subsidize makers in their efforts to establish green supply chains. Data communications company Accton has already passed verifications and will receive NT$20 million in subsidy. Other companies also applying include AIM, Alpha Networks, Mitac, FIC, and ASUS. The Ministry plans to explain its subsidizing program for demonstration companies in the second half of July 2005.

According to statistics provided by the Industrial Development Bureau, merely 5% of all Taiwanese makers currently meet the requirements of the WEEE regulations, while only 3% are capable of conforming to the RoHS directive. The implementation of these two orders in the European Union is expected to add another 3% to 5% recycling cost to Taiwanese makers' expenditure, while increasing their production costs by 5% to 10%.
